It is found in the sun and most of the stars, and the planet Jupiter is composed mostly of hydrogen. On Earth, hydrogen is found in the greatest quantities as water. It is present as a gas in the atmosphere only in tiny amounts – less than 1 part per million by volume.
Where is Hydrogen Found?
Hydrogen can be produced from diverse, domestic resources, including fossil fuels, biomass, and water electrolysis with electricity. The environmental impact and energy efficiency of hydrogen depends on how it is produced.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, comprising 75% of the universe by mass. It is found everywhere: from the water we drink to the stars in the sky. On Earth, hydrogen forms the most number of compounds.
The water molecule is composed of two hydrogen atoms, each linked by a single chemical bond to an oxygen atom. Most hydrogen atoms have a nucleus consisting solely of a proton.
Hydrogen combines with other elements to form numerous compounds. Some of the common ones are: water (H2O), ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), table sugar (C12H22O11), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). Hydrogen has three common isotopes. The simplest isotope, called protium, is just ordinary hydrogen.
This type of hydrogen is not created by humans, but is found in its natural form, as a free gas, either in layers of the continental crust, deep in the oceanic crust, in volcanic gases, in geysers or in hydrothermal systems. Hydrogen seems to be present in a wide range of rock formations and geological regions.

Henry Cavendish Hydrogen/Discoverers Hydrogen was discovered by the English physicist Henry Cavendish in 1766. Scientists had been producing hydrogen for years before it was recognized as an element. Written records indicate that Robert Boyle produced hydrogen gas as early as 1671 while experimenting with iron and acids.
